Simple sowing, growing and harvesting advice for your dill.

Sowing

Sow dill into moist, free-draining compost. It can be grown in containers or outdoors in a sunny, sheltered position once conditions are suitable.

Germination & Seedlings

Keep the compost moist while seedlings establish, but don't waterlog it.

Give developing plants enough room and light so they aren't competing heavily with neighbouring seedlings.

Light & Position

Dill grows best somewhere sunny and sheltered.

Watering

Water during dry weather, particularly when growing in containers. Aim for consistently moist rather than saturated compost.

Growing On

Dill is an annual and will eventually flower and produce seed. For a longer supply of fresh leaves, sow several small batches between spring and mid-summer.

Harvesting

You can begin harvesting leaves from around six weeks after sowing. Take a few leaves at a time and leave plenty of the plant growing.

If allowed to flower, dill also produces edible flowers and aromatic seeds.

Feeding

Dill generally doesn't require heavy feeding when grown in suitable compost.

Helpful Tip

Sow more than once. Rather than expecting one dill plant to provide leaves indefinitely, make small repeat sowings for a longer harvest.
